Concert Details
Anna Friz - "La
Vida Secreta de la Radia"
A radio suite in three parts, traversing alternately
sibilant and sonorous seas of static. Ghosts and dreamers encountered.
Maps are lost. FM transmissions sent and received live, using two low-watt
transmitters and a muster of radios.
Don Ross - "Vowel
Sonatas"
Vowel Sonatas is based on the poetry of Bard College
professor John Yau. A prerecorded tape of electronically manipulated
recitations from the book Borrowed Love Poems features background textures
and effects by sound designer Dave Clarke and samples lent by Australian
hurdy-gurdy artist Barb Dwyer. Don is joined by Russel Whitehead on trumpet
with live processing by Dave Clarke.
Ah... the tales a verb can tell. The resonance of its voice,
its call to awaken and engage, to activate. It pushes and pulls reluctant
time, harries and prods fickle memory. The root of action, the key to
energy's heart and borders, it is both attack and decay, beginning and
end.
Mark
Hannesson - "Familiar Monsters (3 views to a Secret)"
The same experience is looked at from three different
views. The piece tries to describe loneliness and isolation as creatively
positive experiences.
My apartment, where the music was composed, largely influenced
many of the compositional elements of the piece: distant music heard
through paper thin walls; sounds that are familiar - yet distorted to
become almost unrecognizable.
A single nylon-string guitar note and a single piano
note are the only sound sources.
For this piece we use the stories of the city combined
with the phil unhmarmonic orchestra where local muscians and artists
are invited to play instruments they have never played before.
